In 1977, The Cramps, with Lux Interior on vocals, Poison Ivy on guitar, Bryan Gregory on guitar, and Nick Knox on drums, entered Ardent Studios with Chilton. This session resulted in the band's first two releases, which permanently left their mark on the music world. However, what many fans might not know is that the band had planned to record their song 'TV Set' as their first A-side, along with another track or tracks. Chilton's advice to play every song they knew and commit the best to vinyl led to the inclusion of 'Lonesome Town' on the Gravest Hits EP. This decision, as Rollins notes, was 'fantastic advice' and 'luckily for us'.
Fast forward to the late 1980s, and Lux and Ivy sought to release more recordings from the 1977 sessions, resulting in the album Gravest Gravy. However, for reasons lost to time, the album was shelved. In 2026, Rollins and MacKaye, with the help of a dedicated team, decided to bring this album to life. The process involved carefully transferring the tracks from seven 1/4-inch reels, with all seven reels having withstood the test of time. The team had to determine which mixes were the keepers, and after concentrated listening and notetaking, they agreed on the final selections.
MacKaye's involvement added another layer of expertise, as he volunteered to do some EQ and level adjustment on two tracks at Inner Ear Studios. The final mastering process, overseen by engineer Pete Lyman at Infrasonic Sound, ensured that the album's brilliance was extracted from the 1977 amber block. The result is a six-song side of The Cramps, ready to be inflicted upon the ears of those who appreciate the raw, unfiltered sound of rock 'n' roll.
Gravest Gravy is a treasure trove of early Cramps covers and original songs. It features a performance of 'Hungry' by Paul Revere and the Raiders, with Chilton jumping in on organ, and a cover of 'Problem Child' by Sam Phillips. The album also includes a great version of 'Rocket In My Pocket' and tracks from the band's second album, Psychic Jungle, with Kid Congo Powers taking over for Bryan Gregory.
